The Hebrew Name of God – El

The name for God meaning “strength, might, or power.” The basic form El appears over 250 times in the Tanakh. Appears primarily in construct relation when describing the God of Israel.

In Scripture, the primary meanings of this root are “god” (pagan or false gods), “God” (the true God of Israel), and sometimes “the mighty” (referring to men or angels). When used of the true God of Israel, El is almost always qualified by additional words that further define the meaning that distinguish Him from false gods.

The Names of God … Elohim

Posted: June 28, 2010 in Names of God

Elohim is the Hebrew word for God that appears in the very first sentence of the Bible. We find here that He is the One who began it all, creating the heavens and the earth and separating light from darkness, water from dry land, night from day. This ancient name for God contains the idea of God’s creative power as well as his authority and sovereignty.

The name Elohim is unique to Hebraic thinking: it occurs only in Hebrew and in no other ancient Semitic language. In the traditional Jewish view, Elohim is the Name of God as the Creator and Judge of the universe (Gen 1:1-2:4a).

Scripture … In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).

The Light of Israel
Isaiah 10:17 And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;

A new name for the Wonderful One! David says, “The Lord is my Light and my Salvation”, and so He is. He is the Light that flashed into the darkness of our sin-stricken souls and brought us pardon, peace and power. Let us walk in the consciousness of that unchanging Light. Let our hearts, also, go out in longing that those who are “Lightless” and “Lifeless” may be brought to His feet that they too may walk with us in the Sunshine Road.

The Rose of Sharon

The Rose of Sharon

Song of Soloman 2:1 I [am] the rose of Sharon, [and] the lily of the valleys.

The “Rose of Sharon” was, in reality, just a flower of the field; not distinguished; a lowly but a lovely flower. How marvelous that the Holy Spirit, then, should apply this title to our Lord Who “made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant”. Paul said of himself, “I am less than the least of all saints”, and exhorted the believers to “let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus”. A true, Christ-like humility should characterize Christians, and it does those who are nearest to His heart. “Seekest thou great things for thyself? … seek them not”, but seek to reflect the life of “The Rose of Sharon”.

King of Glory

Psalm 24:10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he [is] the King of glory. Selah.

Jesus Christ is the Sustainer of all the forces of the universe [Col 1:16], the Ruler of all worlds, but He is awaiting the time when He will return “in His Glory , and shall sit upon the throne of His Glory” [Mt 25:31]. When that day comes, no one will have to ask, “Who is this King of Glory?” — the universal result will be … “To Him every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the Glory of God the Father!”

Bible Names of God: My Fortress

My Fortress

Psalm 18:2 The LORD [is] my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, [and] my high tower. {my strength: Heb. my rock}

The Lord is not only a Rock upon which we may stand and meet every test and trial, but he is a “Fortress” — a place of safety and protection from our enemies. We can HIDE in Him. [Col 3.3] No enemy can breach the fortification when we are “Safe in the arms of Jesus. We can turn to Him in times of danger and distress, remembering that, “The Name of the Lord is a Strong Tower; the righteous runneth into it and are safe.”

Bible Names for God: My Shield

My Shield

Psalm 3:3 But thou, O LORD, [art] a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

David was a man of war and appreciated the value of a shield against assaults of the enemy. Listen to his testimony: “Thou art my Shield!” What a note of confidence! He alone is sufficient to shield us from Satan and his cohorts — foes within and foes without. It is in such conditions that we need to rejoice in Him Who is our “Shield”. How He loves to answer our call and calm our troubled souls! Let us lift up our heads that we may catch His smile of love.
